NELSON WASN’T SURPRISED to find that his dinner with Mariah had already become common knowledge and was now of more interest to his staff than Judy’s elopement.

Judy had been considerate enough to only miss two days of work, so he hadn’t had much to complain about. And while she didn’t talk much more to him than previously, she was smiling most of the time.

Kailey was also smiling when he came in the door of the clinic. In theory, the three of them started work at the same time. Most days Nelson was the first in. But he swore Judy and Kailey must coordinate on days when they wanted to embarrass him, because then he’d walk in to the two of them staring at him.

“Now what?” he asked, grumpily. He hadn’t slept well last night. Some instinct of self-preservation told him he’d been incredibly stupid to fall in with Mariah’s fake engagement plan.

“So is it serious?” Kailey’s eyes were sparkling. “How long have you two been together? Does this mean she’s staying in Carter’s Crossing?”

He sighed. He didn’t want to feed their nosiness, but this was supposed to be the start of a relationship with Mariah. He couldn’t be too grumpy, but if he didn’t object to some degree, they’d get suspicious. At least, they should.

“I presume you’re talking about the fact that Mariah and I had dinner together last night.”

Kailey squealed. He raised his hand to stop her.

“She wanted to talk about my rescue horses. She had some crazy idea about using them in her plans for the town, so I told her no. That’s all it was.”

Kailey shook her head. “I don’t think so. You could have talked about that at your place. Come on, boss, you can tell us.”

Sure. Then he decided he could have some fun with this.

“I told Mariah that, but she wanted to go to Moonstone.”

He scowled, but inside he was grinning. They hadn’t decided who was going to be the initiator of this dating thing, so he’d start the ball rolling. That was as far as he was going to go for now, though.

“Don’t you two have real work to do?”

Judy headed to the back, a smile on her face, though Nelson wasn’t sure if it was about his having dinner with Mariah, or just the same newlywed glow she was wearing these days.

Kailey leaned over, glancing to make sure Judy was gone.

“Seriously, boss, I’m happy for you. Even if this doesn’t work out, you’re putting yourself out there.”

Nelson headed to the back to get ready for his first appointment. He didn’t respond to Kailey, but inside, he was smug. This was going to work out well. Well enough that Kailey wouldn’t be the only one who’d stop worrying about his social life.

And he felt a little warm inside. Sure, small towns were nosy, but they cared.

He wondered what Dave would say at the next dart night.
